The letter that changed everything I was in my office when I heard my wife say "Oh no, what's this?" I opened the door to find her stood anxiously in the hallway, holding a letter from HMRC. We braced ourselves. It was a tax rebate. £412.61. Rather than spend it on something forgettable, we used it as a catalyst. The conversation we'd been avoiding My wife has always been concerned that if anything happened to me, she wouldn't know what to do financially. It's something we'd talked about but never acted on. She'd been excluded from the money side of our lives (not intentionally), but because I handle it all. That needed to change. Lunch, a laptop, and a standing order So last Monday, our eldest at school, our youngest napping, we sat down over lunch. I walked her through opening a Stocks & Shares ISA on Hargreaves Lansdown. We transferred £300 into a low-cost, well-diversified ETF. Then we set up a £150 standing order — automated, monthly, landing in that same ETF within 24 hours of payday. She works part-time. This isn't life-changing money today. But that's not the point. No longer will we say one day. The habit is built. The automation is running. Now we forget about it and let compounding do the rest. What it actually bought us A tax rebate could have disappeared into a shopping basket and been forgotten by Thursday. Instead it bought something that doesn't depreciate: peace of mind that my wife has started her own independent journey toward financial security, and a habit that will quietly pay us back for the rest of our lives. One question for you What recent win (however small) could you turn into a habit that compounds? |

I Had a Glimpse Into a Potential Future — and I Didn't Like What I Saw... Last weekend, we met some old friends for lunch. The conversation ebbed and flowed, and eventually turned to their parents. They're both in their early 60s — worked hard all their life, always earned comfortably, but always lived in the moment rather than planning ahead. As the conversation got deeper, we learned that our friend's grandfather had recently passed away. He was the one potential source of inheritance their...
