#010 - The Wealth Wire

The Wealth Wire.

The 5-minute briefing for busy professionals building wealth.

This week: State pension age pushed forward again β†’ SpaceX's rocky IPO β†’ EV mileage tax hits your wallet β†’ a free system to invest on autopilot.

Welcome to the first issue of The Wealth Wire πŸ‘‹

Every week I'll condense what I've learned, researched, and actioned on building wealth into a 5-minute brief β€” so you can skip the noise and get straight to what actually moves the needle on financial independence.

Let's get into it...

MONEY MOVES:

The State Pension just moved further out of reach.

The UK state pension age is rising to 68 β€” seven years earlier than planned. If you're relying on it to fund retirement, the goalposts are moving against you, and I wouldn't bet on the pot getting any bigger by the time it's your turn.

So what: if you haven't started building your own pot yet, this is the nudge. The state isn't going to backstop your retirement β€” you need to.

Does IPO stand for "It's Over Priced"?

SpaceX's stock ($SPCX) has fallen off a cliff since its IPO β€” down roughly 30%, from around $200 to $135. It's the same pattern almost every hyped IPO follows: a pop on day one, then a grind lower once reality catches up with the story.

So what: I steer clear of IPOs entirely. I'd rather own the whole market through a low-cost, diversified ETF like $VOO or $VWRL than bet on one story surviving the hype cycle.

Driving an EV just got more expensive.

The government has confirmed a 3p-per-mile tax on EVs β€” a move some say undercuts its own net-zero targets. If you've already switched to electric, every mile just got pricier. If you're weighing up a switch, the maths just changed.

So what: run the numbers before you commit. Copy this prompt into any AI tool to get a clear cost comparison for your situation:

"Compare the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for an Electric Vehicle (EV) versus a comparable [gasoline / hybrid] car over [X years / X miles]. My details: Location: [Country / State or City]. Annual mileage: [e.g. 12,000 miles]. Preferred EV model or class: [e.g. Tesla Model 3, midsize SUV]. Preferred gas/hybrid model or class: [e.g. Toyota Camry, Honda CR-V]. Please give me a clear breakdown of all major costs (purchase price after incentives, energy/fuel, maintenance, insurance, depreciation, registration/taxes, home charging setup if needed). At the end, clearly state the Best Case Scenario β€” which option has the lower TCO, by how much, and what would tip it the other way."

Wealth on Autopilot β€” the exact checklist I use to invest every month without lifting a finger. If investing depends on you remembering to act, it won't happen. Set it up once, and let it run forever.

QUOTE OF NOTE:

"You climb as hard as you can... just advancing one inch at a time. That's the secret of life." β€” Charlie Munger, on effort

Wealth isn't built in the headline moments. It's built in the hundreds of small, boring, disciplined decisions nobody sees β€” the same ones behind that autopilot checklist above.

THE TAKEAWAY:

This week's theme: control what you can control.

The government's shrinking your pension. The market's punishing hype over substance. New taxes are quietly raising your cost of living. None of that is in your hands.

What is in your hands: automating your investing, avoiding the hype (IPOs, meme stocks, whatever's trending), and cutting costs before they creep up on you. Small, boring, compounding decisions β€” repeated for a few decades β€” are what actually get you free.

One thing to do today: pick one β€” start the side hustle, cut one unnecessary expense, or increase your monthly investment by even Β£20. Compounded over 30 years, small moves like this are the difference between relying on a shrinking state pension and not needing one at all.

See you soon,

James Hall

I Had a Glimpse Into a Potential Future β€” and I Didn't Like What I Saw... Last weekend, we met some old friends for lunch. The conversation ebbed and flowed, and eventually turned to their parents. They're both in their early 60s β€” worked hard all their life, always earned comfortably, but always lived in the moment rather than planning ahead. As the conversation got deeper, we learned that our friend's grandfather had recently passed away. He was the one potential source of inheritance their...

Raising lifelong investors. I just had an expensive week. My wife, mother, and youngest son all have birthdays within a few days of each other. I’m not complainingβ€”just aware of how quickly it all adds up. I’m grateful to have them in my life, and to be able to celebrate them properly. My youngest is two. At that age, birthdays are mostly about cake, balloons, and tearing open presents faster than anyone can keep up. Like most two-year-olds, he received a small mountain of toys and cardsβ€”some...
