What Happened. We were driving to my mothers birthday meal, kids dozing off in the back, wife in the front, talking about a trip to Florida. The emotional decision was made, we said we were going to go, it's something we've always wanted to do. But the following 48 hours I was constantly questioning the decision. Asking myself "Can we really afford it?" & "Could this money be better off used somewhere else?" What This Changes. This internal tug-of-war felt familiar as a dad trying to live for the moment, plus build financial security for my family. The financial goals I've set were built in a vacuum, they didn't always take into account enjoying life. My default setting goes to - every pound we spend on this trip is one less pound invested, and that one less pound invested loses out on compounding for the next 20-30 years. The reality is, this is a real opportunity cost, and something that should be considered when making big financial purchases. The flip-side is that some experiences don't compound either. Miss them and they're gone. The Reality. I noticed that I already made the emotional decision we were going, now I just had to rationalise it. Once I saw this clearly, it really helped. Instead of pretending this was a purely rational decision, one night after the kids went to bed, we sat down and honestly answered these 5 questions:
Once we answered these, the decision was final. We're going. The budget question did more than help justify our decision. It helped us dig deeper and ask everything else we spend money on and whether it deserves to be there. The Lesson. We've now changed our mindset. We're not spending more, we're just spending differently. By auditing our spending, prioritising and cutting everything that's not a priority, we're keeping spending at the same level. This means cheaper family days out, less eating out and no unnecessary upgrades for the foreseeable. By making these deliberate trade-offs, we're directing money towards what matters most to us right now. Lifelong memories with our kids. Instead of letting money leak without noticing. Sit With This. Now your turn:

I Had a Glimpse Into a Potential Future — and I Didn't Like What I Saw... Last weekend, we met some old friends for lunch. The conversation ebbed and flowed, and eventually turned to their parents. They're both in their early 60s — worked hard all their life, always earned comfortably, but always lived in the moment rather than planning ahead. As the conversation got deeper, we learned that our friend's grandfather had recently passed away. He was the one potential source of inheritance their...
